The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist

Fresh off the enormous worldwide success of Furious 7, director James Wan could have made almost any movie he wanted to make. Instead of making Furious 8, though, or some other action blockbuster, Wan chose to return to the world of horror and helm The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist. What prompted him to make that decision?

The sequel is drawn from a true story involving two young sisters who lived in Enfield, a borough in north London, England. In August 1977, their mother called police to their home after the sisters reported seeing evidence of supernatural activity. Additional reports gained the attention of the media and the case received media coverage for a couple of years, with considerable debate on the authenticity of the reports. Eventually, paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren arrived from the U.S. to look into things further.

The first trailer teases the fearful sights and sounds experienced by the two young girls and their mother (Frances O'Connor). Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprise their starring roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren. Two new photos, via Hey U Guys, isolate key moments; above we see Farmiga as Lorraine Warren, encountering something quite terrifying. Below we see her with Simon McBurney as British paranormal investigator Maurice Grosse, Wilson as Ed Warren and O'Connor as Peggy Hodgson.

The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist

Wan broke onto the scene with his terrifying and explicitly violent horror movie Saw more than 10 years ago and then demonstrated his versatile talents with the creepy puppet movie Dead Silence and the underrated crime thriller Death Sentence before returning to ghostly visions with the tension-filled trio of Insidious, The Conjuring and Insidious: Chapter 2. Meanwhile, Furious 7 definitely proved he had the chops to make a big Hollywood production fly and he'll be returning to that realm for the D.C. comic book adaptation Aquaman, slated for release in 2018.

This movie looks like a somewhat lower budgeted break for Wan, in between giant-budgeted action epics. We can't wait to see what secrets and surprises will be revealed in his newest ghost story. The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist opens in theaters on June 10.
