Christopher Nolan is one of our most sentimental and optimistic storytellers working today. His Batman trilogy is ultimately all about a man rising above the self to do what his city needs (even if it's not what they deserve). Interstellar is about humans, despite being on the ropes, finally stepping out into the stars. His movies, even ones with dark subject matter like Memento, always explore some glimmer of humanity that saves people from becoming the worst version of themselves.
Judging by the first trailer for Nolan's new movie, Dunkirk, that optimism isn't going to change anytime soon.
Based on the true story of the beach that served as a crucial evacuation point during World War II, Dunkirk looks like it's all about people coming together in the darkest of times to save one another. And, of course, all of that hope lives under a series of stunning action set pieces. Check it out.
Dunkirk stars Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh, James D'Arcy, Harry Styles, Aneurin Barnard, Jack Lowden, and Adam Long. It hits theaters on July 21, 2017.
