What movie are you most excited to see this summer?

That’s one of the questions we asked more than 5,000 participants in Fandango’s 2025 Moviegoing Trends and Insights Study. We also asked about their ticketing habits, premium formats, loyalty programs, and more -- painting a picture of what’s to come for the movie industry.

Here’s what we learned:

Loyal vs. Casual Moviegoers
Loyal Moviegoers (those who saw 5+ movies in 2024) tend to be older and attend more films, while Casual Moviegoers (those who saw less than 4) are typically younger. Online ticket buying is more popular among Loyal Moviegoers (65%) compared to Casual Moviegoers (49%).

Premium Formats Are a Hit
Both groups love premium formats like IMAX and Dolby Cinema, with 77% of moviegoers expressing interest. There's also growing demand for pre-ordering snacks, especially among Loyal Moviegoers, creating an untapped market for theaters.

Loyalty Programs Appeal
Moviegoers are keen on loyalty programs. Loyal Moviegoers favor perks like free upgrades to premium formats, while Casual Moviegoers prefer gifting discounted subscriptions. The top rewards for both groups include waived fees and early ticket access.

Bundles and New Content
81% of moviegoers are interested in bundles that pair tickets with merchandise. Additionally, 80% are excited about watching live sports events in theaters, a growing trend among loyal fans.

Summer Movie Excitement
