In J.T. Leroy, Savannah Knoop (Kristen Stewart) is very excited to be moving to a big city, where she can finally start her life as an adult. She experiences new, great things and is happy to meet new, cool people through her brother Geoffrey (Jim Sturgess). Most notably, she becomes close to Geoffrey's charismatic wife, Laura Albert (Laura Dern), who convinces Savannah to take on a whole new persona.
Laura has written a book under the pen name J.T. Leroy and, for her own purposes, wants Savannah to pretend to be the entirely fictional J.T. Leroy, a young man with a mysterious past and uncertain future. Complications ensue, however, because J.T. Leroy becomes famous, even while young Savannah is still trying to figure out who she is.
