Rio As far as googly-eyed, Skittles-colored animated family films go, you can do much worse than this 20th Century Fox release, brought to us care of the Ice Age creators. With eye-popping visuals and fun musical numbers (soundtrack by Sergio Mendes), kids will enjoy the heck out of it and even appreciate the messages of conservation wrapped up in a forgivably clunky story.
Jesse Eisenberg is the earnest voice of Blu, a rare macaw (so rare, he's considered the last male of his species) accidentally owned by Linda, a reclusive Minnesota bookstore owner who found him after he was taken from his jungle home. When Linda finds out a female macaw has been found (Jewel, voiced by a charming Anne Hathaway), she agrees to take Blu to Rio so the pair can mate. Trouble comes in the form of a doublecrossing cockatoo who arranges for a birdnapping by exotic animal poachers. The whole shebang leads up to a crazy, dizzying chase in the middle of Carnivale. A cast of sidekicks feature the voices of George Lopez, Tracy Morgan, Jamie Foxx and will.i.am, among others.
Extras: There are tons. Special features include "Explore the World of Rio"'s beaches, jungles and city; featurettes: "Saving the Species," "The Sounds of Rio," "Carnival Dance O-Rama," music videos, a "Rio de JAM-eiro Jukebox," and more (DVD/BD). Rio is also available in a 3-disc "Party Edition," with a Blu-ray, DVD and digital copy. You'll also get 15 new downloadable levels of Angry Birds Rio.
Soul Surfer The true story of Bethany Hamilton, the teen surfer who lost her arm in a shark attack, starring AnnaSophia Robb in the title role.

Eastbound & Down Seasons 1, 2 OK, we may be a movie site, but I'd be remiss not recommending this hilarious, outrageous series starring Danny McBride (Your Highness, Tropic Thunder) as an wholly unlikeable washed-out baseball player turned middle-school teacher who drinks too much, relentlessly hits on the principal's girlfriend, and swears like a trucker in front of little kids. Not for the faint of heart, but if you're a fan of pitch-black comedy, this is a must-see.
More new on BD: John Cusack's 1985 coming-of-age comedy Better Off Dead; Schwarzenegger manhandles the world in the original Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer; Spy Kids 1 2 and 3; Clint Eastwood's cowboy classics A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More; Sam Peckinpah's The Magnificent Seven, The Name of the Rose
