Looks like Denzel Washington is staying in the thriller genre for a little while longer. The award-winning actor has officially been cast in the lead role of The Equalizer, an adaptation of the late '80s television series.

The television series ran for four seasons, won a Golden Globe award and starred Edward Woodward as Robert McCall. The show follows McCall as a former covert ops expert who donates his services to people in trouble. Deadline reports that the television premise will be the jumping off point for the film.

Washington will play "a solitary, monastic figure who hates injustice and devotes himself to helping people who are being victimized."

No word yet on who might direct, but with recent roles in 2010's Unstoppable, this year's Safe House and the upcoming Flight, Denzel looks to be nestling himself into the thriller genre quite nicely. In addition to The Equalizer, he's also currently filming the action drama 2 Guns opposite the likes of Mark Wahlberg, James Marsden and Paula Patton.

Sony is looking to push for an April 2013 start date, with filming taking place in Boston.
