Warner Bros. and DC are moving pretty aggressively on getting the character of Green Lantern back into the fold, teaming veteran writer David Goyer with up-and-comer Justin Rhodes (Grassroots, Unmanned) on a new Green Lantern film that's being described as "Lethal Weapon in space," according to Deadline.
The film, based on a story by Goyer and DC chief Geoff Johns, will serve as an origin story of sorts and focus on both Hal Jordan and John Stewart, the latter being an African-American Marine sniper who is brought into the Green Lantern Corps. and, we presume, trained by Jordan. Considering the Lethal Weapon description, their rocky relationship will likely be at the heart of the film.
As of now the release date stands at July 24, 2020 (but that could change and potentially even move up) and no cast is in place yet. Chances are Ryan Reynolds won't be brought back to play Jordan considering he's plenty busy with furthering the Deadpool character in future films. DC's approach seems like a smart one as it jockeys to offer its fans an alternative to Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.
How far will the DC folks push it, though? That first Lethal Weapon is R rated, and considering the success of Deadpool, not to mention the upcoming Logan, could we potentially see a scenario where this Green Lantern movie opts for an R rating in order to both distance itself from Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as the failed 2011 movie starring Reynolds? We don't necessarily think that's the route they'll take, but in this post-Deadpool world anything is possible.
