Channing Tatum and Ryan PhillippeIf you're an actor currently working in Hollywood, there's a good chance you've already auditioned to play Captain America in Marvel's highly-anticipated superhero flick, due in theaters in 2012. While it's already been reported that Matrix baddie Hugo Weaving will play the iconic Captain American villain Red Skull, we still don't know who will be donning that classic red, white and blue costume…and this is after a whole slew of recognizable and not-so-recognizable names have tried out.

What was once thought to be John Krasinski's (The Office) role to lose has now turned into somewhat of a casting mess as producers and director Joe Johnston slave over names and faces in an attempt to find the guy who will best fit the job. Keep in mind that whoever they do wind up casting will have to sign on for multiple films, including The Avengers, and so that little nugget of info is probably one that's slowing down this process considerably.

The latest news is that both Channing Tatum and Ryan Phillippe (who starred opposite one another in Stop-Loss) have auditioned for the role. Tatum is the guy who I thought long ago would be best for the role, and I remember speaking to him about it roughly three-or-so years ago when he was still a fresh face. Phillippe, on the other hand, would be an awful choice; he'd bring way too much smugness to a role that calls for a heckuva a lot of heroic coolness. Fans are also rooting for Chris Evans (who's like a smaller, more charismatic Channing Tatum) to win the part.

Will one of these three become our next Captain America? If it were up to you, who would you want to win the part: Chris Evans, Channing Tatum, Ryan Phillippe or someone else entirely?
