Earlier this week we shared the news that Avatar was finally dethroned by Dear John, which means the box office is now a wide open playing field. This weekend finds a star-studded rom-com going up against a special effects-heavy kid flick and the remake of a classic Universal film. Will love conquer all? Let's take a closer look…

Valentine's Day and The Wolfman

What's the Scoop: The year's largest star-studded ensemble cast comes together to follow the trials and tribulations of several different characters trying to survive Valentine's Day.

Why It Might Win the Weekend: If you stack your film with this many familiar names (we're talking Julia Roberts, Taylor Lautner, Taylor Swift, Jennifer Garner, Bradley Cooper, Anne Hathaway, etc ..), and you don't win the weekend, then it's time to call the love doctor because this nation is sick as a dog.

What's the Scoop: A remake of Universal's classic monster movie, this gothic period piece follows a man who's bitten and cursed to become a horrifically violent wolf.

Why It Might Win the Weekend: Those single men and women out there may want to ditch the lovey-dovey Valentine's Day in favor of something dark, gruesome and unrelenting.

What's the Scoop: Based on the popular series of books, this first installment in what may become an eventual franchise finds a teenager who learns he's a descendant of a Greek god and then takes off on an adventure to help settle an on-going battle between the gods.

Why It Might Win the Weekend: A lot of folks feel this has the potential to become the next Harry Potter, but in order for that to happen its loyal legions of fans will need to show up and turn it into a winner at the box office.

My Prediction: Since Valentine's Day is on Sunday, I have a feeling most people will make it a theme weekend and sneak out to see Valentine's Day on the big screen. That's my pick to win it all.
