With all the excitement for Back to the Future Day last fall and the yearly celebration of Star Wars on May the Fourth, it's surprising more movies haven't been marked on the calendar for their own pseudo holiday. There is a new one coming up next month, though, and it's time for the hype to begin. Twentieth Century Fox has picked April 26 to be Alien Day with the date based on the number found in the name of the moon LV-426 (aka Acheron) where the creatures are first found in the movie franchise.
Like Back to the Future, there are shoes associated with this series, also from its first sequel, Aliens. While Nike had the self-lacing sneakers of Back to the Future Part II's vision of 2015, it was Reebok that got product placement in James Cameron's 1986 sci-fi action film. Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and Bishop (Lance Henricksen) each wore a style of "Alien Stomper," as they've come to be called, and now the shoe company is making the two sneakers available online and in stores for the occasion.
Other merchandise will join the sneakers, but not everything has been revealed just yet. According to The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog, which also broke the Reebok replica news, there will be trivia challenges and a new audio drama starring Rutger Hauer called Aliens: Out of the Shadows (not to be confused with the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel), as well as screenings of Alien and Aliens in Alamo Drafthouse cinemas.
As seen in the ad below, Reebok did issue a version of the Alien Stompers in stores 30 years ago, and they're quite a collector's item. The shoes have also been part of greater lore for fans, with many claiming they saw an extra scene featuring Ripley's pair in close-up so the Reebok logo was more prominent than in the rest of the movie. However, it's just one of those legendary scenes that never actualy existed.
