We're crushing hard on English actor Matthew Goode, who has probably his biggest role yet in Self/less as a slippery, untrustworthy scientist who convinces a dying man (Ben Kingsley) to transfer into a younger man’s body (Ryan Reynolds) – without giving him the whole story. Get on board with this list of reasons why this dapper gent should be your new international obsession.
1. Goode has got his own signature pose.
And it's working for him.
2. He makes 18th century aristocrat wear look good!
Last year, Goode's radiant charm proved the perfect introduction for Amma Asante's beautiful biopic Belle, which told the inspiring story of biracial English aristocrat Dido Elizabeth Belle. Not only did he tease the status and luxury of her father's side of the family, but his joy also hinted at the happiness her life would eventually bring.
3. Gruff and tumbled works for him too.
"Now that's a kiss!" In Leap Year, Goode was the bearded and brusque Irishman to Amy Adams’ clueless American tourist. And she wasn't the only one he made swoon.
4. He drinks wine just like us!
We are all very refined.
5. He's a bit of a goofball.
Oh, sure. He seems all posh gentleman with his English accent and all. But give Goode that glass of wine and he'll open up about his embarrassing adolescent obsessions, his first kiss, and what it was like meeting Woody Allen for his Match Point audition.
6. He can make even pancakes for dinner romantic.
As the earnest and honest Finn Polmar on The Good Wife, this enchanting ingendude gave us hope that Alicia might find happiness, even in the wake of a brutal loss.
7. Just check him out in a cape!
His age and looks made his casting as Ozymandias/Adrian Veidt in 2009's Watchmen controversial. But whether sporting a bright purple sports coat or a sculpted superhero costume, Goode deftly embodied the hubris and madness of the Watchmen's most dangerous member.
8. Goode believably teaches Benedict Cumberbatch the art of seduction.
In the Oscar-nominated biopic The Imitation Game, Goode was the ever-smooth wingman to Cumberbatch's socially awkward genius Alan Turing. You can get a taste of his swagger (and cheekiness) in the clip.
9. He's even smoking hot as a creepy uncle.
In 2013's Stoker, Goode portrayed the mysterious Uncle Charlie in a twisted coming-of-age tale that's still got us tingling with tension and crushing hard. (Don't judge us!)
10. We’ve been looking forward to Self/less.
In Tarsem Singh’s new thriller Self/less, Goode offers a Faustian deal to an aging but affluent man, and so poses the question: what cost is too high for immortality? We've got goosebumps already.
