What is Dust & Illusions about?
Co-Presented with The Los Angeles League of Arts: DUST AND ILLUSIONS, 2009, 80 min. Dir. Olivier Bonin. Born in the underground of San Francisco in the 1980s, the Burning Man festival became the largest counter-cultural event in North America. It is unique in that it is created by the people who come to the event - the participants, not the organizers. In that sense its original ideals have survived for 30 years, despite some erosion by time and pressure from the larger society. This film is a look at the evolution and expansion of the event to a multimillion dollar business, and how politics might have replaced philosophy. Discussion following with director Olivier Bonin and other guests to be announced. Starting at 1:00 PM in the Egyptian Courtyard, a complete afternoon full of activities for all ages, with demonstrations of Burning Man art and performances, bacon gifting, and miniatures and drawings of the art proposed for the 2011 festival.
